Robert Rowling Biography

Robert Rowling was born in 1953 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning an undergraduate degree in 1976 in business administration and afterwards earned a law degree with honors from Southern Methodist University. In 1981, Rowling went to work for Tana Oil and Gas, a company which his father had co-founded. Texaco acquired Tana in 1989 for $476 million. Rowling used this money to start up TRT Holdings, which is the holding company of Omni Hotels and Gold’s Gym.

TRT has become a highly successful holding company under Rowling’s supervision. He purchased the Corpus Christi National Bank in 1990 and after recapitalizing it with a mere $20 million. He sold it four years later for $131 million. Rowling then purchased the Omni Hotel chain in 1996 for $500 million. He quickly ordered the removal of cheap porno programing and upgraded the rooms. Omni hotels have now been expanded to more than 50 locations with more than 15,000 rooms. TRT then acquired Gold’s Gym for $180 million.  Rowling has also revamping the beleaguered Tana Exploration Company, which does oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico.  TRT also has significant ownership interests in Waldo’s Dollar Mart, located throughout Mexico, and Gold’s Gym International.

Rowling was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in October of 2003. Although a native to Texas who lives in the Highland Park area of Dallas, Texas, he lives a rather discreet and private life. His house has been valued at $8.5 million and is within walking distance of the Dallas Country Club, where Rowling, an avid golfer, is a member.

Rowling has a current net worth of $5.6 billion. Well diversified, Rowling’s can expect his earnings and net worth to increase dramatically over the next few years.
