Ronda Stryker Biography
Ronda Stryker was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1954. Her grandfather, Homer Stryker, founded Stryker Corporation in 1941, a medical device company, of which she inherited a portion. Stryker grew up in the Westnedge Hill area of Kalamazoo. She was very close to her grandfather, who often told her that she should always do the right thing because it was the right thing to do, not because it would make her richer. Stryker was only 4 when her grandfather’s company made its first $1 million in revenues.
Stryker attended Loy Norrix High School, then the University of Northern Colorado, where she earned her teaching certificate. Stryker lost her father in an airplane accident in 1976 and she returned to Kalamazoo to be near her grandparents. She worked as a special education teacher’s aide at South Junior High School but quit teaching once she got married and became a mother.
Stryker has been a big investor in downtown Kalamazoo. She owns the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites. She donated $100 million to the Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo, to build a new medical school. She has served on the board of Stryker Corporation for almost 30 years. She was recently given the 2013 YWCA Lifetime Woman of Achievement Award for her contributions to the community.
Stryker is known for being a frugal person even if she is a billionaire. Her favorite store is Target. Her daughter has said that her mother would rather give money away to charity than spend it on something fanciful. Stryker has given millions to various charities, mostly anonymously, something that her daughter has said she passed on to her children.
Stryker owns about 7.3 percent of Stryker Corporation, which is now a $9.7 billion maker of medical software and medical devices. She has a current net worth of $3.8 billion, which has substantially and steadily increased over the last few years.
