Rupert Murdoch Biography

Rupert Murdoch was born in Australia in 1952. His father was a war time correspondent who later owned two newspapers and a radio station. Murdoch was a co-editor of his school newspaper and worked part time at the Melbourne Herald and was groomed by his father from a very early age to take over the family business. Murdoch attended the University of Oxford in England where he completed an MA.

Murdoch returned from college ready to take over the family business at News Limited. He turned the newspaper, Adelaide News, into a major success. Over the years, Murdoch began to acquire and expand his business. He purchased the Sunday Times in Perth, Australia, acquired two newspapers in New South Wales, along with the Sydney tabloid The Daily Mirror. Murdoch is believed by many to be the inventor of the modern tabloid, by increasing the coverage of sports and scandal pages, along with attention grabbing headlines. He acquired multiple publications in other countries as well, including the UK and Asian markets.

Murdoch moved into television in Australia in the late 1950’s, however he later sold these assets and moved his interests to American television. He created the Fox Broadcasting Company in 1986. Fox News has grown into a multi-  million dollar industry, crushing other competitors. In 2010 alone, Fox News generated more than $700 million in operating profit. The Wall Street Journal, already America’s largest newspaper, continues to expand while other papers shrink or go bankrupt. News Corp also became the first publisher to sell digital subscriptions on iPads with a $30 million launch of The Daily in February of 2013.

In 2011 Murdoch faced allegations that his company News of the World had hacked and wiretapped the phones of celebrities, royals, and ordinary citizens. As a result of the scandal, he resigned as director of News International.

Although Murdoch had to split up some of his empire after his divorce, he has come back swinging. With a net worth of $14.6 billion, along with more than 120 newspapers in 5 countries, a broadcasting and satellite TV arm, publishing company HarperCollins, and one of the largest movie studios in the world, 21st Century Fox, Murdoch is sure to recoup and gain earnings that most people only dream about.
