Serena Williams Biography
Serena Williams was born in September of 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. The youngest of 5 sisters, her family moved to Compton, California, when she was still a toddler. Serena began playing tennis when she was 3 years old. Her father home-schooled Williams, along with her older sister Venus, so that he could coach them in tennis. The family moved again when Williams was 9 to West Palm Beach, Florida, so that she could attend the tennis academy of Rick Macci.
Williams’s first professional game was in September of 1995 but she lost the first round of qualifying. She won her first match in 1997, ranking in as #99 in the world of tennis players. Williams has since gone on to be ranked #1 five times and has earned more prize money than any other female tennis player in the history of the game. She has earned more than $66 million in prize money as of 2013 and won more than 18 singles Grand Slam Titles as well as 13 doubles titles alongside her sister, Venus. She won 3 gold medals at the Sydney, Beijing, and London Olympic games.
Williams is also one of the most popular athletes in the world when it comes to endorsement deals. She earns almost as much for her endorsements as she does for her tennis games. In 2004, Williams signed a $40 million deal with Nike to produce a fashion line. She also earns $15 to 20 million each year with her other lucrative endorsement deals with big companies such as Kraft Foods and Tampax.
In 2009, Williams became part owners of the Miami Dolphins. She had some health problems in 2010 that required surgery, but she appears to be back on top of her game. Williams has a current net worth of $130 million and lives in Palm Beach, Florida.
