Steven Spielberg Biography

Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 18, 1946. His mother, Leah Adler Posner, was a concert pianist and his father, Arnold Spielberg, was an electrical engineer.

Spielberg spent his childhood in Haddon Township, New Jersey. As a teenager he made amateur 8 mm adventure films with his friends. He made his first film at age 12 entitled The Last Gunfight to earn a Boy Scouts merit badge.

When Spielberg was 13 he made a 40-minute war film, Escape to Nowhere. At 16, he wrote and directed his first independent film, Firelight, which was a 140-minute science fiction adventure. This film later inspired Close Encounters.

Spielberg began working in television in 1969 at age 23 when he directed the pilot episode of Night Gallery. This led to more work and in he was soon contracted by Universal to direct four TV films.

Riding on the success of the films, he was offered the job of directing Jaws. Jaws was an enormous success, setting the domestic record for box office growth and winning three Academy Awards for editing, original score, and sound. The film made Spielberg a household name and one of America’s youngest multi-millionaires.

Spielberg went on to direct Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Poltergeist (1983), The Goonies (1984), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), The Color Purple (1985), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989),  Hook (1990), and Jurassic Park (1993).

1993’s Schindler’s List won Spielberg his first Academy Award for Best Director. The American Film Institute later listed the film as one of the 10 Greatest American Films Ever Made.

In 1994 he took a break from directing to form DreamWorks, his film studio. All of his films from 1994 to 2008 were released by DreamWorks.

Notable films made by Spielberg and released by DreamWorks include, Saving Private Ryan, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, War of the Worlds. He sold DreamWorks to Paramount Pictures in a $1.6 billion deal.

Today Steven Spielberg is considered to be the most powerful man in Hollywood and has a net worth of $3.6 billion. Royalties and a slice of every ticket sold at Universal theme parks thanks to the licensing of films such as Jaws and E.T.  give him an annual salary of $150 million.
