Toby Keith Biography

Toby Keith Covel, best known by his stage name of Toby Keith, was born in 1961 in Clinton, Oklahoma. The family moved a few times, first to Arkansas, then to Moore, Oklahoma when Keith was still young. His grandmother owned a supper club in Fort Smith, where Keith would listen to the musicians who came there to play. He did odd jobs for his grandmother and finally convinced some bands to let him play with them. He was given his first guitar at the age of 8. Keith graduated from Moore High School and worked in the oil fields during the day, playing with a band he formed with some friends called the Easy Money band.

Keith was unemployed in the early 1980’s due to a decline in the oil industry.  Keith returned to music and made a vow that he would have a recording contract by the time he was 30 or he would never play music again. A flight attendant gave a demo tape of Keith to a Mercury Records Executive, who signed him to a contract with Mercury. His first single in 1993 went to number one on the Billboard Hot Country Song chart and would become the most played country song of the 1990’s. Keith has gone on to release 17 studio albums, four compilation albums, and two Christmas albums. He has had 67 singles hit the Billboard Hot Country Song charts, including 21 number one hits, and 21 top ten hits. His biggest songs have been “Beer for My Horses” in 2003 and “As Good as I Once Was” in 2005. Keith has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide.

Keith is part owner of his own restaurant chain, “I Love This Bar & Grill”, which has numerous locations throughout the US. He also owns his own brand of tequila named “Wild Shot.”  He has a net worth of $65 million and many more years of hit song writing to add to his earnings and net worth potential.
