Travis Kalanick Biography

Travis Kalanick was born in the summer of 1976 in Los Angeles, California. He grew up in the Northridge, California area, attending Granada Hills High School, and then enrolling at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied computer engineering. Kalanick had the idea to start his own business since he was a youngster. He sold knives door to door, and then began his own SAT prep course called New Way Academy when he was only 18.  School did not appeal to Kalanick and he dropped out to create a multimedia search engine called Scour Inc., as well as a peer to peer file exchange service called Scour Exchange. Unfortunately, numerous musical and motion picture businesses filed a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement, forcing Scour to file for bankruptcy.

Kalanick came back swinging by co-founding RedSwoosh, another type of network software company. Unfortunately, he had issues with his co-founder. Despite the problems he had with this company, it was successful and in 2007, Kalanick sold RedSwoosh to Akamai for $23 million. Kalanick spent his first year as a multi-millionaire by traveling around the world. He also owned a large house and employed a personal chef. In late 2008, Kalanick began planning his new business, Uber, and thinking of ways to lower the cost of running this service. UberCab launched in June of 2010 in San Francisco. Uber has been so successful that it now operates in more than 130 cities in 45 countries.

Although Uber has had its difficulties (it is banned in Spain and was banned for a short while in India), the company estimates that it will expand throughout Europe in 2015. Kalanick has a net worth of $5.3 billion. This is only his 3rd start up company; imagine the net worth and earning potential this young entrepreneur still has in store.
