Tyler Perry Biography

Tyler Perry was born Emmitt Perry Jr in 1969. He has been quoted as saying that his father’s answer to everything was to beat it out of him. He attempted suicide as a child to avoid his father’s beatings. His mother regularly took him to church, however, where he found refuge. He legally changed his name to Tyler when he was 16 in order to distance himself from his father.

While watching The Oprah Winfrey Show, he heard someone say that writing had very therapeutic effects. He began writing letters to himself, which became the basis for a musical “I Know I’ve Been Changed.” When Perry was 22, he financed the community theater production of “I Know I’ve Been Changed” with his entire $12,000 life savings. Although it was a financial failure, Perry continued to re-write the play until he finally found success with the play in 1998. By 2005, Perry had sold more than $100 million in tickets, $30 million in videos, and $20 million in merchandise.

Perry has since gone on to make numerous successful television shows, and box office movie hits that have earned him more than $260 million. Perry often writes movies about African American families that solve their problems using humor and/or religion, very similar to his own young life. He is also a successful author: his first book, Don’t Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings, was published in 2006. It reached number one on the New York Times Best Seller list and remained there for 12 weeks, selling more than 30,000 copies. Perry has an exclusive multi-year contract that he signed in 2012 with Oprah Winfrey and her network to direct and produce various films and television series.

Perry has a net worth of $ 400 million, which is sure to grow as he continues to increase his earning potential with new films and writing opportunities.
