Warren Buffet Biography

Warren Buffet was born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 30, 1930 to parents Leila Stahl Buffet and Congressman Howard Buffet.

As a child Buffet showed his entrepreneurial interest by selling Coca-Cola, chewing gum, and weekly magazines door-to-door. As a high school sophomore he pooled $25 with a friend to buy a used pinball machine, which they placed in a local barber shop. They soon owned several machines in several barber shops.

His father owned a brokerage office and Buffet spent time in the customer’s lounge. At the age of 11 he made his first investment in the stock market when he bought three shares of Cities Service Preferred.

Buffet earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Masters in Science in Economics from Columbia in 1951.

After graduating Buffet worked as an investment salesman, a securities analyst, and a professor of Investment Principles at the University of Nebraska.  In 1956 he founded Buffet Partnership Ltd. He began gathering outside investors and investing their money with his own.

In 1962 Buffet became a millionaire with $1,025,000 of the $7,178,500 in his partnerships. That same year, he began buying shares of Berkshire Hathaway, a textile manufacturing firm, for $7.60 per share from then-owner Seabury Stanton. In 1965 Buffet took control of Berkshire Hathaway and moved the company into the insurance business.

Today Berkshire Hathaway’s shares are the most expensive of any public U.S. company at $200,000 per share. The company wholly owns GEICO, BNSF, Lubrizol, Dairy Queen, Fruit of the Loom, Helzberg Diamonds, FlightSafety International and others and is invested in American Express, The Coca-Cola Company, Wells Fargo, and IBM.

Buffet is the world’s third-wealthiest person with a net worth of $68.1 billion. He makes an estimated $37 million a day and last year alone made $8.5 billion.

Warren Buffet partnered with friend Bill Gates in 2010 to form The Giving Pledge, a campaign to encourage the wealthiest people in the world to make a commitment to give away their wealth to philanthropic causes. Buffet has pledged to give away 99% of his net worth, about 83% of that will go to The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
