Willard Smith Jr., more commonly known as Will Smith, was born in West Philadelphia in September of 1968. His parents separated when he was 13. Smith attended Overbrook High School and was admitted to a pre-engineering program at MIT, although he never actually applied. Smith never applied to any college as he said he never had any intention of attending.

Smith began his career as the MC of a hip hop duo called DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince. They did radio-friendly, humorous, “up” type songs and earned a Grammy in the Rap category in 1988. Smith forgot to pay his taxes on his newfound fame and ended up flat broke until he signed a contract with NBC to play in a sitcom called The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. The show was very successful and ran for six years. It was Smith’s transition into film that launched him into the spotlight. Independence Day and Men in Black earned $817 and 593 million, respectively. Smith has twice been nominated for an Academy Award. With his movie Hancock in 2008, Smith holds the record for an actor to star in the most consecutive $100 million grossing movies. He has also produced some of this own films including I Am Legend, Seven Pounds, and Hitch. Smith has numerous other awards including two BET Awards, and four MTV Movie Awards.

Smith married actress Jada Koren Pinkett in 1997 and they have two children, who have also starred in their own films or co-starred with their father in films. Smith and his family live in a mansion in Los Angeles, California. He has a current net worth of $240 million and his latest film, After Earth, earned more than $200 million gross in worldwide sales. Smith is producing a film with Jay-Z to be released in 2016.
